Building Aquatic Leaders

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course

Earn your certification in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Lifeguarding through the Blended Learning American Red Cross Lifeguard Course. Through lectures, online presentations, and in-person skill sessions, you will be ready to start your career as an aquatic leader.

REQUIREMENTS: You must be:

  • At least 15 years of age.
  • Access to a computer or tablet & the internet.
  • Successfully pass the prerequisites: a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest. and a timed event within 50 seconds.

PREREQUISITE OPTIONS: Before attending the first day of class, all lifeguard candidates must pass the perquisite. They are offered on the following days / times; April 21 from 3-5pm, April 27 from 12-4pm, or April 29 from 7-8pm

SPRING 2024 CLASS SCHEDULE: You must attend all in-person class sessions to earn your certification. There are no exceptions.
May 5 10am-4pm, May 19 10am-3pm, June 2 10am-4pm

Please note – this will take no longer than 20 minutes, you must get in the water, and you only need to do this assessment once.

Let’s Play Pickleball

Beginner Clinic for Adults

Be confident on the Pickleball court and have more fun! Four (4) session program will cover basic Pickleball skills – building a strong foundation.

Week 1: Game rules & Understanding the Court, Scoring, Paddle use, and Dinking
Week 2: Serving and Return of Serve
Week 3: Transition and 3rd Shot Drop
Week 4: Blocking the Bangers and Punch Volley

Swimmers in Training

Swim Club

Interested in swimming but not in competition? Swim Club is here for you! The program focuses on continuing to build endurance and stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Coaches will focus on the following important milestones:

  • Developing endurance in the competitive strokes
  • Developing skills related to competitive swimming, such as flip turns, starts, & finishes
  • Enhancing skills and building endurance

Practices are offered three times per week on Monday & Wednesday from 7-7:45pm and Sunday from 8:15-9am for swimmers ages 10-14.

Triple Your Confidence

2024 Race4Chase Youth Triathlon

Race4Chase is a six week youth triathlon training program aimed to provide kids ages 6-12 with a safe and non-competitive environment to discover the sport of triathlon. Under the direction of dedicated and spirited coaches and coach volunteers Race4Chase brings together kids from different athletic abilities and backgrounds. At the culmination of camp, all youth athletes compete in a USAT sanctioned triathlon at Camp Sloper in Southington on Saturday, August 3.

Complete one application per child. If selected, completion of a registration packet is required.

Due to limited space, selection priority will be given to first time registrations, a demonstration of need, and those indicating a sincere desire to participate for the duration of the program.

Movement for Parkinson’s

Reduce Symptoms. Live Better

A class designed to help adults of all levels maintain an active lifestyle while focusing on cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility and balance.

Tuesday/Thursday 10:15 – 11am: Stage 3 – 5
Loss of balance (such as unsteadiness as the person turns or when he/she is pushed from standing). Falls are more common. Motor symptoms continue to worsen. Restricted in his/her daily activities now, but is still physically capable of leading an independent life. Need to ambulate with a cane/walker for safety. Stiffness in the legs may make it difficult to stand or walk.

Tuesday/Thursday 11:15 – 12pm: Stages 1 – 2
Mild symptoms that generally do not interfere with daily activities. Tremor and other movement symptoms occur on one side of the body only. Changes in posture, walking, and facial expressions occur. Symptoms start getting worse. Tremor, rigidity and other movement symptoms affect both sides of the body or the midline (such as the neck and the trunk). Walking problems and poor posture may be apparent. The person is able to live alone, but daily tasks are more difficult and lengthier.

Participant’s are placed based on their individual evaluation.

Healthy Kids Day, April 20, 2024 10am-1pm

Find Your Fun, Find Your Y At Healthy Kids Day!

The Soundview Family YMCA is hosting their annual Healthy Kids Day® on Saturday, April 20 10am-1pm. This free, open to the public, annual event features a variety of family-friendly activities to encourage healthy kids, healthy families and a healthy start to the summer season. Come and celebrate with us! We’ll have activities and special demonstrations and vendors including:

Financial assistance is available for families who need it to ensure that all kids in our community can have enriching summer experiences. These forms are required to apply: Financial Assistance Forms

If your child is 14-15 years of age, they may be interested in our Counselor in Training program. In our CIT program, they will receive valuable job interviewing skills, child care training, leadership experience, team building, and problem-solving skills. LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a FREE twelve-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors.

Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self-esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life.

In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, Y staff and members. Y cancer exercise trainers work with each participant to fit the program to their individual needs. Trainers are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise and supportive cancer care. Classes will be offered weekdays with daytime and evening classes.

The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program includes:
• Two 75 minute classes per week
• Full access to the Y seven days a week

CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPATION
• Available for individuals currently undergoing cancer treatment or have completed their treatment.
• Strong personal desire and commitment to attend classes
• Obtain a signed medical clearance form
• Participate in an interview with our Intake Specialist, complete a confidential health assessment and program registration forms.
